Belgrade Main Street, Demonstration Project

Thank you to all attendees and survey participants during the Belgrade Safety Action Plan engagement events in March, April, and May of 2025. A significant amount of community feedback was received, which has informed our plan for safety enhancements for the broader Belgrade area. For more resources, we encourage you to click the links on the right-hand side of this webpage.

A demonstration project is in the works for Main Street as a part of this plan. Starting this summer, temporary pedestrian crosswalks and intersection improvements will be installed in downtown Belgrade. The pilot project will include several treatments to improve the experiences of people traveling on Main Street in a car and on foot, including:

  • Curb extensions created with pavement markings and flex-posts
  • Crosswalks with more visible pavement markings
  • Shared vehicle-bicycle pavement markings
  • Crossing warning signs

This pilot project will test the effectiveness of these treatments. They will be installed in June and removed in later in the fall of 2025. This pilot project is occurring in partnership with the Montana Department of Transportation to support the Belgrade Safety Action Plan's goal of improving transportation safety.

During the Main Street Demonstration Project, please submit all feedback via this survey or to Joe Hauck, City of Belgrade Engineer at jhauck@belgrademt.gov. A Spanish speaking version of the survey is linked here. Community members may also submit feedback online by scanning the QR code on the sandwich boards on Main Street. Your feedback will help inform whether these temporary improvements on Main Street should be eliminated, tweaked, or made permanent in the future.

Feedback received through the Main Street Demonstration Project and the Belgrade Safety Action Plan will continue to directly inform key locations for safety treatments. These recommendations will be included in the Draft Plan. The Draft Safety Action Plan will be finalized by the City of Belgrade and partnering agencies this summer.

The Safety Action Plan’s recommendations will include toolkit of safety treatments for transportation-related projects within the Belgrade Planning Area. The City of Belgrade will seek short-term and long-term opportunities to implement the Safety Action Plan as funding becomes available. A timeline for funding allocation has not yet been determined, meaning any recommended projects for the Belgrade Planning Area, including Main Street will incrementally take place.

The City of Belgrade was awarded a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning & Demonstration Grant. This funding supports the development of a comprehensive, well-defined strategy to prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries through a Safety Action Plan (SAP) for the Belgrade Planning Area.

What is a Demonstration Project?

A “demonstration” or “pilot” project tests out roadway safety treatments using lower-cost materials, to study if the treatments are effective in improving transportation safety for people walking, biking, and driving. After the pilot, the treatments can be removed, tweaked, or made permanent.

What Treatments are Being Piloted on Main Street?

Several roadway safety treatments are being piloted on Main Street this summer, including: Curb extensions created with pavement markings and flex-posts, crosswalks with more visible pavement markings, shared vehicle-bicycle, pavement markings, crossing warning signs.
